IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARENTS / GUARDIANS
August 16, 2010 Welcome to the 2010-11 school year! We warmly welcome all new and returning students and families, and look forward to working together to ensure college-readiness for every RMMS student. Our staff has spent the summer planning for a successful new school year. Included in this letter, is important information for students and families. Welcome Back to School BBQ and Open House, Saturday, August 21 We cordially invite you to join us for our annual Back to School BBQ and Open House from 11:00 am – 1:00 PM. At this time, we will sell school polo shirts and PE clothes. The cost of the BBQ is $5.00 with all proceeds going towards RMMS. While there is no formal program, our Student Council Members will lead tours for new students and families, and applications will be accepted for After School All Stars and Los Angeles Team Mentoring. Reading Incentive Programs This year, our focus will be to increase the amount of books that students read outside of school. We encourage every family to encourage students to read daily for at least one hour. Summer Reading Assignment Every student is required to complete the Summer Reading Project and turn in the assigned book report to their Language Arts Teacher on the first day of school. Grade 8 Reading Assignment All incoming 8th graders are required to read The Hunger Game by Suzanne Collins before the first day of school. This is a required assignment for Ms. Menzies’ US History Class. Information about the Trailblazer Reading Challenge to follow soon! First Day of School School begins on Monday, August 30, 2010. School hours are Monday – Friday from 7:45 am to 3:18 PM, except for all Wednesdays, when students are dismisses at 1:45 PM, to allow teachers time for training and instructional planning. Student schedules will be passes out in the Multi-Purpose Room beginning at 7:00 am on the first day of school. Parent Involvement One of the core values of every Alliance School is Parents are Partners. Family involvement is critical to the success of our school. Every family is required to earn a minimum of forty volunteer hours for the year. Parents can earn hours in a variety of ways; volunteering during the day, chaperoning field trips, and attending meetings, school events, and conferences throughout the year. The Parent Center is open daily, for all RMMS and GRHS Parents. We look forward to working together to provide the best possible educational setting for your child. Labor Day Holiday School will be closed on Monday, September 6, 2010 in observance of the Labor Day Holiday. School will resume for normal hours on Tuesday, September 7, 2010.
